DRIVE AND THE NEW ZEALAND CURRICULUM

Key competencies are the capabilities people have, and need to develop, to live and learn today and in the future.

The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies:

  • Thinking
  • Relating to others
  • Using language, symbols, and texts
  • Managing self
  • Participating and contributing

At Newbury School we see strong alignment between the key competencies and our DRIVE values.

This video of Mary Chamberlain, Ministry of Education, provides a brief description of the key competencies, explaining their importance for employment and personal well-being. (Duration 0.33)

We understand that the key competencies work together and influence each other, just as our DRIVE values do; however, Using Language, Symbols and Texts is woven through all aspects of our DRIVE values and doesn’t align with any one particular DRIVE value.

What does DRIVE mean?

We define each DRIVE value as the following:

Determined
to believe that you can do or succeed at something.

Respectful
to think and act in a positive way about yourself, others and the environment.

Inspired
to know the way, show the way and go the way.

Visionary
to think, explore, and create.

Empowered
to make choices and act.
